CTLD Use of Gen AI in Course Developments

Recently, Dr. Olysha Magruder, Interim Assistant Dean for Center for Teaching and Learning Design (CTLD), and instructional designer Osmara Salas, M.Ed,  presented how the CTLD team uses AI to enhance efficiency, productivity, and creativity in course developments. The Intersections: Online Learning + Innovation in Higher Education conference, sponsored by the University of Florida, brought together educators, instructional designers, and administrators to share experiences, strategies, and initiatives to navigate the rapidly evolving field of online education. A strong theme throughout the conference presentations included the ethical use of generative AI in various contexts. As the CTLD team embraces using Gen AI to assist in course development tasks, an informal survey of 11 team members generated the following results in how they use various AI tools. Our findings were categorized into three main categories: Enhanced Learning Design, Video Lecture Creation, and Assessments.

We continue to investigate and adopt Gen AI tools to assist in course developments with caution, curiosity, and enthusiasm.  Faculty Forward workshops will provide guidance and opportunities to enhance our use of AI skill sets.
