The competitive nature of higher education, for students and instructors, often depicts an environment where “being kind” is left behind. In the Virtual Book Club fall selection, A Pedagogy of Kindness, author Catherine Denial challenges us to rethink the way we teach and interact with students and advocates for creating a more supportive and inclusive learning environment through kindness. Supported by evidence-based insights and her personal experiences as a professor, the book presents a renewed approach towards teaching and shares how instructors can do so while including care and compassion for both students and themselves. Denial provides practical tips for restructuring syllabi, measuring student achievements, and building trust and inclusivity. Join us in exploring these practical strategies to foster compassion, justice, and belonging in our classrooms while creating a space where engagement in teaching and learning can flourish.
The hour long virtual kick-off event will be held On October, 22nd followed by two other one-hour long zoom sessions on November 5th & 19th. All sessions are held at noon (ET) and provide a platform for engaging discussions, sharing insights and connecting with fellow faculty and staff.
