Session Description

This short course explores how to design multimedia instruction to help students learn better. It starts with a brief overview of Richard Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and focuses on a set of principles grounded upon this theory as well as research evidence. The course discusses how these principles can provide guidance to the design of multimedia instruction to maximize learning. It presents related studies, best practices, and recommends “Tips and Keeps,” strategies for creating effective multimedia content (lecture presentations and videos) along with examples from online engineering courses as well as tools used to create the content. Participants are encouraged to share their practice portfolios showcasing the application of multimedia learning principles.

This course is self-paced, 2-weeks long, estimated to take 2-3 hours to complete.
