STEM for ALL DELTA Grant Initiative

The Center for Learning Design and Technology (CLDT) was recently awarded one of the 2023 DELTA grants to develop and implement the innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for Active Learning Laboratories (STEM for ALL) program. The proposed program is set up to equip educators with the tools they need to lead the charge in active learning within STEM disciplines. The STEM for ALL initiative expands the boundaries of current faculty development offerings within Faculty Forward by championing active learning strategies in STEM courses. The faculty development program seeks to enrich classroom experiences and establish a platform for collaboration, empowerment and knowledge dissemination that resonates far beyond the Whiting School.

The program’s goals acknowledge the spectrum of needs, preferences and time constraints among participants. The program is designed to accommodate diverse interests, modalities and depths of engagement. The core strength of this initiative lies in its three-pronged approach to faculty development which are designed to cater to faculty members at varying stages of mastery and enthusiasm for active learning integration.

The first, a self-paced MOOC, functions as a foundational stepping stone. Here, participants embark on a journey that unravels the intricacies of active learning strategies tailored to STEM subjects. The second element, the Active Learning Laboratories (ALLs), provides instructors with resources to seamlessly infuse active learning into diverse course formats – be it in-person, blended, or online settings.

The third pillar, a Community of Practice devoted to the Scholarship of Active Teaching and Learning, provides an ecosystem where participants collaboratively delve into the intricacies of active learning in literature. Stemming from, and feeding into, real-world experiences, this component will ensure that knowledge sharing is rich, organic, and relevant.
