Championing Growth – Celebrating the 5th Cohort of the Faculty Forward Fellowship Program

GrowthIn the heart of innovation and academia, the Faculty Forward Fellowship (FFF) Program continues to provide pathways towards enhancing teaching practices and collaborative growth. This year marked a milestone as the fifth cohort of this transformative program concluded. Participants gathered both online and in person at the Stieff Silver Building of the Homewood campus, the home of the Center for Learning Design and Technology (CLDT).

The Faculty Forward Fellowship, a JHU Provost Office DELTA Grant initiative, presents a unique and comprehensive opportunity for faculty members across the university to refine their teaching methods and amplify their impact. With a blended approach that combines online engagement and in-person interactions, this program has emerged as a staple of faculty development at Johns Hopkins.

The 2023 cohort of the Faculty Forward Fellowship witnessed 13 cohort graduates, adding to the tally of 94 program alumni to date. Faculty hailing from seven schools across the Johns Hopkins University and the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), embarked on a journey of growth and exploration that will enhance their teaching careers.

Problem of Practice

At the heart of the program lies the “Problem of Practice” (PoP), a powerful concept that accelerates participants into the realm of transformative teaching. A PoP revolves around a question posed about a problem, challenge, or gap in current teaching practices. Throughout the fellowship, faculty members develop a plan of action – crafting a plan that investigates the core of the problem, explores potential solutions and charts a course for implementation. This implementation portion of the plan becomes a guide as participants work to integrate the innovative solutions developed into their future courses. By identifying, and implementing solutions for, their PoPs, participants fortify their teaching expertise and forge meaningful connections within the Johns Hopkins community.

A novel addition to this year’s fellowship was the participation of past Faculty Fellowship graduates who took on the role of Fellowship Facilitators. Their inclusion enriched the program by providing valuable insights and peer-to-peer learning experiences. Facilitators led in-person and online sessions, facilitated engaging discussions, and served as reflective journal coaches. This collaborative approach proved to be a success fostering an environment of shared learning and growth.
